Why It’s Not “Just a Bad Period”

Why It’s Not “Just a Bad Period”

For far too long, people living with endometriosis have had their symptoms dismissed as “just bad periods.” But endometriosis is not a normal part of the menstrual cycle—and this misunderstanding has real consequences.

This article aims to challenge that myth, explain what endometriosis really is, and highlight why early recognition and support are so important.

What Is Endometriosis?

Endometriosis is a chronic inflammatory condition where tissue similar to the lining of the womb (endometrium) grows in places it shouldn’t—such as the ovaries, fallopian tubes, bowel, or bladder.

Each month, this tissue responds to hormonal changes just like the lining of the womb—but it has no way to exit the body. This causes pain, inflammation, and sometimes internal scarring (adhesions), which can affect organs and fertility.

Around 1 in 10 women and people assigned female at birth in the UK are affected by endometriosis (NHS, 2023).

It’s More Than Period Pain

While many people experience some discomfort during their periods, endometriosis pain is not normal. It can be severe, disabling, and persistent—often affecting many areas of life, not just during menstruation.

People with endometriosis may experience:

  • Pelvic pain that doesn’t go away
  • Pain during or after sex
  • Pain when going to the toilet
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Bowel and bladder issues
  • Difficulty getting pregnant

These symptoms can occur throughout the month, not just during periods. That’s a crucial difference.

Why the “Bad Period” Myth Is Harmful

Dismissing endometriosis as “just period pain” can lead to:

  • Delays in diagnosis (currently an average of 7.5 years in the UK)
  • Emotional distress and gaslighting of those experiencing symptoms
  • Missed education and work, affecting finances and quality of life
  • Increased risk of complications like fertility problems

“Many people with endometriosis are told from a young age that their pain is normal—or that they’re exaggerating,” explains Endometriosis UK. “This can lead to years of suffering in silence” (Endometriosis UK, 2024).

Endometriosis Isn’t Visible—But It’s Real

One of the reasons this condition is so misunderstood is because it’s invisible. People may look fine on the outside while dealing with chronic, life-altering symptoms every day.

You can’t “see” pain, inflammation, or fatigue—but that doesn’t make them any less real.

In a 2023 survey, over 60% of respondents with endometriosis said they felt disbelieved or dismissed by healthcare professionals during their diagnostic journey (RCOG, 2023).

Changing the Conversation

Challenging the myth that endometriosis is “just a bad period” is key to improving outcomes.

We can:

  • Listen to people’s experiences without judgement
  • Educate ourselves and others about the signs and symptoms
  • Advocate for earlier diagnosis and better support
  • Use social media and real stories to raise visibility

Final Thoughts

Endometriosis is a serious medical condition that affects millions—not an exaggeration, not a weakness, and certainly not just a bad period.

By raising awareness and believing those affected, we can help ensure they get the recognition, treatment, and support they deserve.
